The Academy of Medicine of New Jersey has long represented the commitment of conscientious medical and dental practitioners to professional excellence through education. Throughout its history, the Academy has been a catalyst for the formation of Medical Libraries and Archives as well as seminars and other beneficial activities. The Academy's officers and fellows continue this proud tradition. The Academy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. The Academy is also accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) to sponsor continuing pharmaceutical education for physicians. The Academy of Medicine is continually expanding its services, constantly reevaluating present practices and is always responsive to new initiatives and needs in continuing medical education in New Jersey and nationally. |

Major and Roving Symposia sponsored by the Academy are included in this Annual Calendar. The Annual Calendar is an integral tool for physicians scheduling CME activities. It also helps organizations avoid scheduling conflicts when planning events. See the Calendar of Educational Activities. |

The Academy's Committee on Education selects subjects of significant medical interest to develop into various educational activities. Program committee organizations are encouraged to submit topic recommendations. The needs assessment is based upon prior conference evaluations, clinical and technological developments, and epidemiological studies. The Academy is both reactive and proactive to the needs of its Fellows and encourages recommendations for state-of-the-art programs. |

Hospitals and health care related organizations have an opportunity to select one hour programs on topics developed and approved by the Committee on Education. Over 200 of these activities are planned for this year. For a full description, listing of topics, and information on requesting a Roving Symposium, see: |

We continue to offer institutions and agencies, which are not accredited to grant category 1 CME credit, the opportunity to work with the Academy to meet the needs of their constituencies. The Academy's Committee on Education has established criteria and a detailed process where we ensure our early and integral involvement in the planning stages of each activity as well as active participation in the development, administration, and evaluation of each activity. |

The general public is showing increased attention to pain management, both in benign pain syndromes and during end of life care. In the near future we could see the establishment of an electronic system for monitoring dispensing of controlled substances. In this context, physicians will be called upon to practice evidence-based medicine within the framework of future regulations. The Academy of Medicine of New Jersey, an organization providing excellence in physician directed continuing medical education will need to develop continuous educational programs regarding non-invasive and invasive pain management methods. We have created the Pain Management Corner of our website to keep physicians informed of pertinent information related to this issue.
