Outline of Antiretroviral Therapy for Pregnant Women With HIV

 

Antiretroviral therapy can:
  • Prolong life
  • Improve the quality of life
  • Suppress HIV to below the limits of detection
  • Preserve or restore immune function
  • Reduce the risk of perinatal transmission
Consequently, it is important to counsel women about antiretroviral therapy and to provide it when necessary. The algorithm below outlines the management of an HIV-positive pregnant woman in 3 different scenarios.
